As the above cartoon from Pearls Before Swine illustrates, it can be sooooooo easy to procrastinate when you have a computer in front of you that’s connected to the Internet. And it’s especially true when you’ve got a tough assignment that needs attention. I’ll just check my email one more time….
If this sounds familiar to you, then think about how it’s affecting the other people in your workplace. Sure, maybe there are restricted websites at your company, but with about 200 million other websites out there, there’s always another fascinating, absorbing, er, I mean, time-wasting site to visit. (Not to mention that workers can still access those restricted sites from their cell phones, creating yet another form of distraction.)
So what do you do… shut off Internet access? No, that’s no answer… that would have been like turning off the telephones in the 1950s. Internet surfing, email and other similar distractions are just part of the workplace today, like phones were then, and we need to deal with it. Just imagine what kind of distractions there will be in the next 5 or 10 years! We’ll probably look back on 2010 as “the good old days”.
