The Harlem Shake is the latest video trend to go viral. The original video was posted on Feb.2, and since then has spawned over 100,000 copycat videos with over a billion views.
One of the copycat videos was by a bunch of miners in Australia doing the Shake. All 16 of the participants were subsequently fired because they had removed their safety equipment to do the dance.
So my questions are, would you fire your employees for doing this? Was it really that dangerous? And what about the benefit of building morale and teamwork - were they overruled by the safety aspect?
I’m as safety conscious as the next guy, in fact probably more so. We produce hundreds of pieces of safety content for our customers and are aware of its seriousness.
But assuming the equipment was all deactivated and the area had been secured in a safe way, firing all of the employees seems pretty harsh to me.
