Corporate Communication Styles are Changing to a More Relaxed Approach

If you told me 5 years ago that big-time CEO would be caught on video doing duck calls, I may have been mildly surprised.  But if you told me it was on purpose, I would have had a hard time believing it.  It’s really hard to believe how much corporate communications have changed in the past few years.

But here it is, Cisco CEO John Chambers exhibiting his duck calling – on purpose:

Where is the restraint, the decorum???  Apparently washed away by the tide of technology and social networking.

And I like it.

It’s refreshing to see a CEO as a real person, even though he IS doing the duck calls in a suit and tie… well, one step at a time.  Compared to the British stodginess we’ve witnessed in the BP oil mess (e.g., their CEO saying “We care about the small people”), I’ll take duck calls every time.

This relaxed type of corporate communications makes it easier for Cisco employees to see their CEO as a real person, perhaps someone they can identify with – not some “suit” in the corner office.  This is a definitive trend I am seeing with our customers, in the press and at industry meetings.  If you’re a manager who’s job includes communicating with employees, consider loosening up your style, too. It’ll send the message to your employees that you’re more accessible or available, which might translate into more employee suggestions for
improving your products, processes…and your company.
