Salesforce has a good definition of digital transformation: “…the process of using digital technologies to create new — or modify existing — business processes, culture, and customer experiences to meet changing business and market requirements.”
Of course, Salesforce focuses on CRM and related software, and they’re very good at it. And I can say that we at Marlin are good at our piece of digital transformation, which is helping companies transform from old fashioned employee communications to a contemporary digital model.
I’m constantly surprised at how many Fortune 1000 companies I visit that are still printing out spreadsheets, work schedules and PowerPoints and tacking them on a bulletin board or taping to a wall somewhere. There is a better way…. much better.
But on the path to “better,” many companies take a wrong turn. They want to transform those communications methods, but then try to do it themselves. Maybe that’s why, according to this McKinsey article, even among digitally savvy industries, the success transformation rate does not exceed 26 percent.
When a company realizes that it’s time to digitally transform its communications, it’s natural to wonder if they can do it themselves. But usually they can’t effectively, any more successfully than trying to have the sales department develop their own CRM.
We get a LOT of new business from companies who tried the DIY method for transforming their communications. It’s just harder and more expensive than they thought, and they finally realize it’s much more effective to outsource to a company that does it every day for thousands of other companies. Yes, uploading a PowerPoint to a screen and having it loop is pretty simple. But designing effective content for the dozens of issues that all companies face isn’t. And neither is designing cloud-based software that allows various admins to quickly and easily manage content.
Transforming your workplace communications to digital is a very good idea. It will free up a tremendous amount of time and allow you to reach workers you haven’t previously been able to with content that’s critical to the future of your company. More employees and locations exponentially increase these benefits.
