Employee Safety: Helping Employees Stay Safe Off the Job, Too

Do as I say…

Wheeeee! You’ve seen them out there―happy families riding their bikes, enjoying the warm weather and getting some exercise. The kids are all suited up with cool bike helmets. Mom and Dad? Not so much. When it comes to safe cycling, it’s clearly a case of “do as I say, not as I do”.

We tend to glamorize the weekend warrior phenomenon, yet it has a way of coming back to bite us in the workplace. The National Safety Council tells us that we’re safer at work than at home, since statistically, workers are more likely to be injured off the job than on.

But whose responsibility is it? Steel-toed boots are the accepted standard in the warehouse, yet Fred the Forklift driver goes home and mows his lawn in flip-flops. What can we do about this “safety awareness amnesia” that seems to set in once the workday ends? Maybe it’s a training issue, but do you really think that spewing more statistics at our employees about the hazards awaiting them at home is going to make a difference? Perhaps Fred would be a much better spokesperson on the topic, especially if he comes into work on Monday with a huge bandage on his foot! There’s got to be a better way.

What are you doing to promote off-the-job safety?
