Oprah Crusading to Raise Awareness against Distracted Driving by Making Cars “No Phone Zone”

OK, I get it. Oprah is the master at generating buzz…in a very big way. This time it’s an all-out crusade to raise awareness against distracted driving by making our cars a “no phone zone”. She’s working with all the movers and shakers from transportation safety organizations, community leaders, celebrities and a few corporations.

The statistics are alarming with 6,000 Americans dying each year in accidents related to distracted driving. Yet no one is talking about the elephant in the middle of the room.

Are we as managers part of the problem?

Don’t we expect our workers to be available 24/7? We have more mobile workers than ever. If they spend any amount of time in their cars, they see it as just another place to continue working—-usually on the phone. On top of that, given the shaky job market, workers are feeling the pressure to be more productive.

Sound familiar? Is productivity trumping safety? Or more importantly, is that “one more call” more important than someone’s life?
