In 2017, the last year for which statistics are available, there were 2.8 million workplace injuries in the U.S. How many of these would have been preventable with the proper precautions? According to the National Safety Council, “each one is preventable.”
Think about the people you know (maybe yourself) who have been injured on the job. Every day – every 7 seconds according to the NSC – someone dislocates a joint, breaks a bone, loses a limb or maybe even dies. What if we could go back in time and tweak things, so the person hit the brakes in time, remembered to lock out her machine, or noticed that oil spill on the floor? That workplace accident would have been avoided, and the person would have gone on with life blissfully unaware that in a different future she was lying in a hospital bed.
Maybe we can’t go back in time. However, today is “back in time” for all the tomorrows. We can do the things today necessary to prevent the workplace accidents of tomorrow. If we can create the mindset that safety prevention is real, that it is genuinely saving untold grief, maybe we can do better.
People saved by safety prevention just don’t know it. They are lucky that someone in their past took the time to show them, to educate and train them, so that in their future, they’ve never had to wonder, “if only I could turn back time.”
