Study Shows Risk of Workplace Injury Higher with Shift Workers

by Jude Carter

A study* of 30,000 Canadian workers indicates that those working the night shift, or rotating shifts are almost twice as likely to be injured on the job than those working the day shift. Women were found to have a higher rate of injury, especially those working rotating shifts. The study, conducted by the University of British Columbia, concludes that, “Regulatory agencies and employers need to consider policies and programs to help reduce the risk of injuries among shift workers.”

Companies often come to us looking for a more effective way to communicate with workers on all shifts. Their main concerns are delivering a consistent message and being able to engage employees at all levels. While workplace safety is usually their primary issue, stress management and morale are equally important. When workers are fatigued, overwhelmed or distracted, they’re more likely to ignore safety procedures or take shortcuts that can cause accidents.

With the popularity of workplace digital signage, companies are finding that high-impact visual communication, with dynamic graphics and colorful animation, is an effective way to engage employees and reinforce key workplace messages.

Electronic message boards have made it much easier for companies to “market” their critical safety messages to all employees. With the latest content management tools, managers can keep important safety metrics up to date and highly visible to all workers.
