Workplace Communication: We’re All SO Connected

By Frank Kenna

If someone had told you 20 years ago that in 2011 almost every person will be walking around with a computer and miniature display screen attached to them, would you have believed it?  And that everyone will be connected together by a worldwide computer network that will allow them to communicate instantly, globally and almost for free? It would have been hard to believe.

And yet, here we are.  We’re all connected in a way that allows unprecedented communication between us 24/7.  So how are YOU communicating with all of your employees who are hyper-connected to each other?  Not still using a corkboard… are you???

This instant workplace communication can work for you or against you, so it’s worth spending some time strategizing about it.  Your employees – and future employees – can read all about your company, your products and you. Internally, rumors spread instantly whether your employees are all in one workplace or located around the world.  The good news is that you can also communicate just as fast – you just have to know how and be ready to do it.

It’s good to start thinking about the who, what, when, why and how of communication.  Who owns your internal communication strategy? What do you need to communicate and when?  Under what circumstances (the ‘why’) will you communicate certain messages, and how will you do it?

Starting with the ‘how,’ a great place to begin is with digital signage (DS).  DS is most easily described as a modern replacement for the bulletin or corkboard.  But it can do so much more.  With it, you can instantly post your corporate communications, in-house documents such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoints and employee recognition pieces.  The list is endless… just about anything you can think of can be posted to your DS assuming you get the right one to fit your needs.

In my next post, I’ll take a look at some of the different types of DS, and which ones would be the right fit for your organization.
