Workplace Digital Signage—The “blank screen syndrome”?

Digital signage for workplace safety programs was one of the hot topics at last week’s VPPPA Region IV conference in Biloxi, MS, where 650 safety professionals shared ideas, experienced new products and attended workshops.

As exhibitors, we presented the Marlin Electronic Communication Station™, a digital signage solution specifically for the workplace. I also conducted a workshop on Using Electronic Message Boards for Safety Awareness. In both settings, we heard a common story.

“Our company just bought a bunch of plasma screens. They’re installed all over our facility, but half the time there’s nothing running on them.” Or, “We have big screens in the break room and they play the same thing over and over again.” Or, We just took down a bunch of these screens, because most of the time they were blank.”

Are you suffering from the “Blank Screen Syndrome”?

Contrary to popular belief, digital signage is NOT about the hardware; it’s all about the content. As much as you may be itching to get your hands on one of those hi-def 60” LCDs for your break room, don’t even think about going shopping until you can answer these fundamentals.

What do you need to communicate?
Who are you trying to reach?
Where are they located?
What are you trying to change/improve?

These answers will start to define what content will work best for you, and how much of it you’ll need to run 24/7 (which, by the way, is a lot!). In a workplace setting, electronic message boards can be very powerful tools for influencing behavior around safety, productivity, morale or customer service. Until you can answer these basic questions, you’re not ready to go shopping. (And when you are, please give us a call!)
