That’s the text that appears on thumb bands designed to help drivers remember not to text while driving. They are being issued by the Iowa police instead of tickets as part of a campaign to raise awareness driver safety.
This is an interesting approach to solving the texting-while-driving problem: instead of being punitive, the police are trying a lighter approach, one of awareness and education.
I’ll be very interested to see how this works, as it’s the approach that we take with our workplace communications program with thousands of our subscribers. For example, in the area of workplace safety, we routinely publish pieces about positive ways to think about safety, reminding readers of the benefits of not getting injured as opposed to the penalties for doing so. We believe that getting a person to want to do an activity as opposed to having to do it, is the more effective approach.
